Rock chip repair in Raleigh is usually a small job, as long as it happens before the chip turns into a crack. A stone thrown off a truck on Capital Blvd, the Beltline or I-87 hits the glass, leaves a mark the size of a pea, and for a while nothing changes. Then a cold start with the defroster on, a hot afternoon in a parking lot or a hard pothole adds stress at the edge of the break, and a line starts to run. Filled early, the chip usually stops there and the windshield stays in the car.

Where the stones come from in north-east Raleigh
The north-east side of the city sits on some of Raleigh’s busiest roads. Capital Blvd carries US 1 out of the city toward Wake Forest. The I-440 Beltline runs around central Raleigh for 16.4 miles. I-87 runs 12.9 miles from Raleigh to Wendell, most of it the Knightdale Bypass, alongside US 64 and US 264. I-540 sweeps across the north. Each carries a steady mix of commuters, delivery vans, pickups and dump trucks, and wherever trucks and fast traffic share lanes, stones get thrown.
Road building adds to it. NCDOT’s Complete 540 project is extending the Triangle Expressway east toward I-87 and US 64 in Knightdale, with completion scheduled for 2028. Work zones mean loose gravel near the lanes and loaded trucks entering and leaving them.
North Carolina law does try to keep stones in the trucks. G.S. 20-116(g) says no vehicle may be driven on a highway unless it is loaded to prevent any of its load ‘from falling, blowing, dropping, sifting, leaking, or otherwise escaping’. Trucks over 7,500 pounds carrying ‘rock, gravel, stone’ must keep the load six inches below the walls and have it ‘securely covered by tarpaulin or some other suitable covering’. A stone can still come off a tire, a tailgate or the road itself, which is why most chips have no one to blame. Our article on what to do when a stone hits your windshield covers the first hour after it happens.
The shapes a chip takes
Glass people describe chips by their shape, and the shape tells the technician how the break runs inside the outer layer.
- Bullseye: a round, cone-shaped break, often with a dark ring. Usually fills cleanly.
- Star break: short legs running out from the point of impact. The legs are what can grow into cracks, so these are worth filling early.
- Combination break: a bullseye with legs. Common from larger stones.
- Pit: a small piece of glass knocked out of the surface with no cracking. Small pits are mostly a cosmetic issue.
- Chip with a short crack: a chip where one leg has already started to run. Whether it can still be filled depends on how far it has gone.
Which chips can be repaired
The industry’s repair standard is ROLAGS, the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard, administered by the National Windshield Repair Division. Its published guidance is that ‘Stone-breaks up to two inches in diameter and single line cracks up to 14-inches are repairable.’ That is the outer limit. In daily practice, shops use simpler rules of thumb: Impex describes small chips as those smaller than a quarter, and says a repair may be possible when the damage is small, shallow and away from the edges.
| The chip | Usually | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Smaller than a quarter, away from the edge | Repair | Small and shallow enough for resin to fill |
| Star or bullseye up to about two inches | Often repair | Inside the ROLAGS limit for stone breaks |
| Any size, straight in front of the driver | Often replace | A filled break can leave a slight distortion in the view |
| At or near the edge of the glass | Usually replace | Breaks near the edge tend to run |
| Through both layers of glass | Replace | A repair fills the outer layer only |
| In front of the camera at the top of the glass | Ask first | The camera looks through that area |
If your chip has already sent a crack across the glass, the decision is a different one. Our page on windshield repair vs replacement in Raleigh sets out the crack limits and when a crack means a new windshield.
Why to fill a chip early
A chip is a weak point in the outer layer of the glass, and the windshield is flexing all the time. The car’s body twists over potholes and driveway lips, the glass expands as it warms and shrinks as it cools, and the defroster heats one area faster than the rest. All of that stress gathers at the sharp edges of the break. That is why a chip that has sat quietly for weeks can suddenly run across the glass on a cold morning.
Dirt and water are the other problem. An open chip collects road film, wash soap and rain, and a dirty break does not take resin as clearly as a fresh, clean one. Until the repair:
- Put a piece of clear tape over the chip to keep it clean and dry.
- Do not pour hot water on frosted glass, and do not point the defroster at the chip on full heat.
- Avoid the car wash until the chip is filled.
- Do not press on the chip from inside or outside the car.
- Take a photo of it, with something for scale, before it changes. It helps with the quote and with any claim.

How a rock chip repair is done at your car
A chip repair needs no shop. The technician works on the outside of the glass with the car parked, and the windshield never leaves the vehicle.
- The technician looks at the chip from outside and inside, checks its size, depth and position, and tells you whether it is a repair or a replacement before any work starts.
- Loose glass and dirt are cleaned out of the break, and the break is opened up where needed so the resin can reach every leg.
- A tool is fixed over the chip and the air is drawn out of the break, so resin can take its place.
- Clear resin is fed into the break under pressure until it fills the legs and the cone.
- The resin is cured with ultraviolet light, which hardens it inside the glass.
- The surface is topped with a little more resin, cured, and scraped and polished flush with the windshield.
A chip repair is a much shorter job than a replacement, and because no adhesive is disturbed there is no drive-away cure to wait for in the way there is with a new windshield. If you have more than one chip, mention it when you call so all of them can be looked at in the same visit.
What a chip repair will and will not do
A good repair stops the chip from spreading and makes it much harder to see. It will not make the glass look as if it was never hit: you can usually still find a faint mark if you look for it. The main gains are practical.
- The windshield stays in place. The factory bond between the glass and the body is left alone.
- No camera calibration. I-CAR lists removing the windshield as one of the events that may require a forward camera to be aimed again. A repair removes nothing, so the camera is left as it was.
- Less time off the road. There is no glass to order and no cure to wait for.
- A lower bill than a new windshield, whether you pay yourself or claim it.
Paying for a rock chip repair in North Carolina
The NC Department of Insurance lists ‘Missiles or falling objects’ and ‘Breakage of glass’ among the losses comprehensive coverage pays for, less any deductible. A rock chip fits both. North Carolina has no law that sets a zero deductible for glass, so whether a claim makes sense depends on your own policy.
- Look up your comprehensive deductible. If it is higher than the repair, paying yourself is simpler.
- Check for full glass coverage. Some policies include it. If yours does, the chip may cost you little or nothing; your insurer will tell you.
- Points. A glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it does not add Safe Driver Incentive Plan points. Insurers may still look at how often you claim.
- You pick the shop. Under G.S. 58-3-180 your policy must let you choose who repairs the vehicle, and the insurer pays the same amount either way.
Impex works with all major insurance providers and can deal with your insurer for you. Have the policy number, or the claim number if you have already opened one, when you call.
When the chip is past repair
Sometimes the answer at the car is that the chip has gone too far: it has reached the edge, it sits squarely in front of the driver, or it has cracked through. Then the windshield is replaced. Our OEM windshield replacement in Raleigh page explains the glass choice, and windshield replacement near me explains how a replacement at your home or work is run. Questions drivers ask
Can every rock chip be repaired?
No. ROLAGS treats stone breaks up to two inches across as repairable, but a chip at the edge, through both layers of glass or right in front of the driver usually needs a new windshield. Impex’s rule of thumb is small, shallow and away from the edges.
Will the chip disappear after the repair?
It becomes much harder to see, but a faint mark usually remains. The main purpose of the repair is to stop the chip spreading into a crack.
Does a chip repair need camera calibration?
No. Calibration follows events such as removing the windshield. A chip repair leaves the glass in place, so the camera is not disturbed.
Will a chip repair claim add points to my NC insurance?
A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it does not add SDIP points. Your insurer may still take into account how often you file claims.
Who is responsible when a gravel truck chips my windshield?
NC law requires covered, secured loads, but proving a stone came from one particular truck is hard on a busy road. Most drivers claim under their own comprehensive coverage or pay for the repair themselves.
Can you repair a chip at my office?
Yes. The repair is done where the car is parked, at home, at work or in an apartment lot in north-east Raleigh, as long as the technician can reach the glass.
